Distressed Kitchen Cabinets

What’s ironic about people who order distressed kitchen cabinets is that they are usually anxious about its safety. They worry about its packing and that they might get scratched and dents. And so what’s the point of having their designs in the first place?

The scratches, dents, and maybe even dings are the essence of the whole concept, especially in a Tuscan kitchen design. The aged look of the cabinets instantly gives your kitchen a different atmosphere, a country feel to be exact. And they would perfect in a house in the rural areas.

Usually, homeowners paint the original kitchen cabinets with the color they want, and then they bang, slam, and do whatever damage they can without, of course, breaking them to pieces.

This method of designing actually gives the furniture a great classic antique look.

If you want to give this a try, you will need paint (color is of your choice), paintbrushes, hammer, keys, sand paper, drill, and varnish. Making your own distressed kitchen cabinets is surprisingly fun and easy.

First, paint the cabinets with your chosen color. Wait for them to dry which might take as long as 12 hours depending on your paint. And then the moment you have probably been waiting for, let the damaging begin.

Use the sand paper to wear off the paint. This makes the cabinet look like it has been around and used for ages. Also use it to make the sharp edges blunt. As for the keys, use them to make scratches. They make good and realistic impressions on the cabinets, not too sharp and thin like a knife’s.

Next, use the drill to create holes similar to wormholes. And as for the dents and dings, you can hit the cabinet with the hammer. You could also use a padlock to give it a really deteriorated look. It gives a more convincing ancient look.

Make sure to damage the ends and the sides too. When your done, coat the cabinets with varnish to make the “designs” last. And then there you have it, your very own distressed kitchen cabinets.
